You can become a veterinarian by graduating from any certified veterinary schools. But in order to become a veterinary specialist one must continue to specialize on any discipline of veterinary science, and undergo training either in the form of an intern or a residency program in any veterinary institute.

Once they have completed their advanced training in the respective fields, they need to submit their credentials to the respective professional organizations through which they have completed the specialization program.

The American college of Veterinary Internal Medicine and American College of Veterinary Surgery are two of the main certifying organizations for specialization in advanced veterinary disciplines. There are about 37 different disciplines of specialization which are recognized by the American Veterinary Medical association.
