Red Rock Canyon gets its name from a large set of red sandstone peaks and walls, which are called Keystone Thrust. The walls can reach a height of about 3000 ft, which make them a popular rock climbing and hiking destination. The highest peak is the La Madre Mountain, which stands at 8,154 ft.

A single loop road of 13 km provides tourist on Las Vegas travel with many features of this vast region. The one-way road gives way to several side roads and parking area, which leads straight to the trails. At the start of the loop is the visitor center, which caters to various visitor queries. Red Rock Canyon is accessible only through a 4-wheel drive road off the scenic loop.

People mistake the unnamed valley cutting of state route 159 as the canyon but this is not true. This area is actually called the Wilson Cliffs or Keystone thrust, as it is commonly known. It also comprises of the Spring Mountain Ranch state park towards the southern end and village of Blue Diamond. The park is actually a replica of Bonnie Springs, a western ghost town.

Red Rock canyon is famous for various sporting activities prominent among which are hiking, biking, scrambling, rock climbing, horseback riding and camping. The last two are allowed only on specific trails. Automobile and motorcycle groups are often spotted on the 13 km loop drive but the use of all terrain vehicles is not allowed in rocky canyon.
