Grand Canyon National Park

Grand Canyon National Park is situated in Arizona, United States of America. It is one of the oldest national parks and it contains the world famous natural wonder, The Grand Canyon. The park is an impressive 1,902 sq miles and covers the unincorporated area of Mohave County and Coconino County. Grand Canyon is basically a gorge of the Colorado River and is the prime source of attraction for tourist round the world to travel Las Vegas.

The basic entrance to the park is through the Arizona Highway 64 to the South Rim. This state highway enters through the South entrance of the park near Tusayan, Arizona and then heads eastwards exiting the park through the east entrance. For those who wish to stay at the park, accommodations are provided and operated by the Xanterra Corporation. Grand Canyon Village is the park headquarters and is located at a short distance from the southern entrance. It is also in close proximity of all the scenic viewpoints in the park.

Another beautiful but a virtually unknown venue is found on the northrim. The reason people miss this venue is because it is accessible only through Arizona Highway 67. The two rims have no direct road connection within Arizona except via the Navajo Bridge, Page, Arizona which is a 5 hour drive and people more often than not tends to skip it. Grand Canyon National Park was declared a national monument in 1908 and designated a national park in 1919.

UNESCO has declared the Grand Canyon National Park a World Heritage Site. No wonders here because the Grand Canyon along with its extensive tributary canyons forms a beautiful natural site. The canyons have been supposed to be created by the incision of Colorado River after the Colorado plateau was uplifted. The combination of amazing depths and large size with the exposed layering of Precambrian colorful rocks is just magnificent.
